"Our first arrivals in New Zealand."
Joseph and Louisa sailed from Gravesend on the "Westminster" on 13th October, 1857, arrivin g in Christchurch 9th January 1858. They paid their own fare, about 30 pounds, 2nd cabin/st eerage class. His occupation was a saddler - Rupert Tipples. From "White Wings" - In 1858 th e "Westminster" made a fast run to Lyttelton, arriving there after a remarkably fine passag e on the 9th January, being only 88 days port to port. The passengers spoke highly of the com forts provided on the ship. Among the 110 souls on board were the Rev. James & Mrs Andrews, M r & Mrs Gould, Messrs Moorhouse, Bonner, Wincop, Burton,(possibly this should have read Buxto n? - Glenda) Mrs Biggs & family, & others whose names are still honoured in Ch.Ch. After disc harging passengers & cargo, the ship sailed for Wellington & Nelson, arriving at the latter p ort on the 6th March 1858.

Soon after Joseph & Louisa arrived in New Zealand, Joseph opened a saddler business in Manche ster St. Ch.Ch., being one of the first to commence that line of business, and after conducti ng it successfully for 14 years, he retired on account of ill health and purchased a farm o n the outskirts of the city, where he lived for about 2 years. He then resided at Heathcote f or about 20 years, and had many property transactions, by which he acquired a great knowledg e of values, his services being frequently called into requisition as a valuer on that accoun t. In 1895 Joseph built the charming residence, Rotorua, at the corner of Office & Boundar y Roads, St. Albans. He took part in local politics, having been a member of the 1st Sydenha m Borough Council, & subsequently of the Spreydon & other Road Boards. Another of his beautif ul homes was that of "Casterton" in Bridal Path Road, Heathcote.
